Την σχετική έκθεση δημοσιοποίησε η Πρωτοβουλία Θαλάσσιας Διαφάνειας Ασίας «Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative» (AMTI), που αποτελεί τμήμα του εδρεύοντος στην Ουάσιγκτον Κέντρου Στρατηγικών και Διεθνών Μελετών (CSIS: Center for Strategic and International Studies). Η Κίνα αρνείται τις αμερικανικές κατηγορίες περί στρατικοποίησης των τεχνητών αυτών νήσων και υποστηρίζει ότι τα οπλικά συστήματα που αναπτύσσει στην περιοχή στόχο έχουν τη διασφάλιση της ελεύθερης ναυσιπλοΐας. Three of China’s military bases in the South China Sea are nearly ready to house combat aircraft and missile launchers, according to a report released by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative Monday. Analysis of satellite imagery reveals China has nearly finished radar installations, airplane hangars, anti-aircraft defenses, and concrete shelters for missile launchers on three of its largest installations in the Spratly Islands. The facilities will allow Chinese aircraft and radar coverage to cover nearly the entire South China Sea.
The Cipher Take: These three bases are part of a much larger effort by the Chinese to enforce a sovereignty claim over the entirety of the South China Sea. Over the past several years, China has reclaimed more than 3,000 acres of land from the sea around islands, reefs, and shoals to build military bases. This has alarmed several countries in the region that also claim some of this territory, and the United States, which is a treaty ally to many of these nations and is committed to upholding freedom of navigation through these waters. Experts fear China may continue its island building and militarization on Scarborough Shoal after a Chinese official suggested Beijing might build an environmental monitoring station there—a precursor to future military installations. The shoal is close to a Philippine naval base used by the United States and the White House has previously stated it would take action if China extended its island building activities.
