Defending Against Weaponized Hobby Drones

The Islamic State is reportedly incorporating weaponized hobby drones—easily attainable on Amazon—into its arsenal. These small drones can be rigged with explosives and flown into coalition forces. The U.S. military is urgently pursuing anti-drone technology to include alert systems and systems that use electromagnetic waves to disrupt the drone’s control link and GPS navigation.
The Cipher Take: Small drones laden with explosives present a new threat in asymmetric warfare, giving insurgents a limited form of airpower. Single drones could be used to target high value individuals, while swarms of explosive drones could bombard bases, embassies and ships off the coast. The birds-eye-view enables improved situational awareness that could improve maneuverability for guerilla tactics. And while the use of electromagnetic energy could be very effective in bringing down explosive drones in open spaces like the desert, it will be more difficult in urban terrain such as Mosul, where there are plenty of buildings and consumer electronics to interfere.
