India, Pakistan to Expel Diplomats Over Kashmir
Indian police seized a Pakistani diplomat at the Delhi zoo, citing his involvement in a spy ring that allegedly provided Pakistan with information regarding India’s security operations in Kashmir. Pakistan has denied the allegations and, in response, has given an Indian diplomat 48 hours to leave the country. The announcement comes amidst continued violence along the Line of Control, the demarcation that splits jurisdiction of Kashmir between Pakistan and India. Both countries claim Kashmir in its entirety.
The Cipher Take: Kashmir has long been an area of contention between India and Pakistan, but the situation has grown markedly worse following the death of a popular Kashmiri separatist leader in July, and India’s imposition of martial law. The situation deteriorated further when militants crossed from Pakistan and attacked an Indian army base in Uri, killing 18. The cross-border violence and diplomatic finger pointing has not ebbed since. This breakdown in diplomacy does not bode well for a near-term, let alone a long-term, solution.
