Assault Against Last ISIS Stronghold in Sirte, Libya

On Monday, pro-government forces in Libya began their advance on the last ISIS-held position in Sirte. Laden with traps, snipers, and suicide bombers, the final battle for the city is reported to be fierce, but observers expect that government forces will be able to clear the area during this final assault.

The Cipher Take: The fall of Sirte will be a significant blow to ISIS in Libya, but many ISIS fighters appear to have escaped the city and will likely begin guerrilla operations. More worrying will be the political dynamics that follow Sirte’s fall. The forces poised to retake Sirte are aligned with the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli; this will aggravate tensions with factions like the powerful eastern militia led by General Khalifa Haftar. His forces have recently captured a number of key oil terminals in eastern Libya and advanced within striking distance of Sirte.
