A bill removing the requirement that Oregon students in the classes of 2022, 2023 and 2024 demonstrate basic proficiency in math, reading and writing to earn a high school diploma passed a key milestone Thursday and is likely to become law. The bill, already approved by majority Democrats in the Senate, was greenlit by Democrats on the House Education Committee for a vote on the House floor as early as next week.

According to the bill's language, the state's Department of Education is directed to develop its new graduation standards with input from representatives for 'historically underserved students,' such as those with disabilities, those who are from immigrant or refugee populations or 'racial or ethnic groups that have historically experienced academic disparities.'

Supporters of the bill say the existing skills were an unfair challenge to students who did not test well. In an email to the media outlets, Charles Boyle, a spokesman for the governor, said the new standards for graduation would help benefit the state’s "Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color."
